Our
school is a mix of old and new building styles with the very
newest classroom providing purpose built accommodation for
upper foundation stage children. The photograph shows its
unusual design. The garden areas to each side of the steps
have been planted up since the photograph was taken, with the
help and financial support of the Castleford and District
Civic Trust with whom the school has a long association.
Despite its urban setting, the school has lovely grounds to
the rear which provide excellent outdoor facilities for
playtimes, P.E. and sport, science and the wider curriculum. |
The
school is staffed by the headteacher, four full-time teachers and
one nursery nurse. A part-time teaching assistant is attached to
each class and each nursery session. There are two office staff,
four lunchtime supervisors, three kitchen staff and the
caretaker/site manager. Our caretaker was awarded 'Caretaker of the
Year' for 2004/05. All the staff work together to ensure the
happiness and well-being of our children. This spirit of
co-operation between staff was recognised when we first achieved the
Investors in People Standard in January 2001. Recognition of our
high standards of academic achievement led to a DfES school
achievement award for three consecutive years. We have recently been
awarded the Basic Skills Quality Mark and the Healthy Schools Award.
Parents
are involved in school in many ways. They join reading mornings,
help with homework and talk to staff. They support events and fund
raising. They attend meetings and courses at school. Several parents
support classes as voluntary helpers. A small group of committed
parents run a fund raising group 'The Friends of Wheldon'. This
group have recently raised money for a sun shelter in the
playground.
