Our
school is a mix of old and new building styles with the very
newest classroom providing purpose built accommodation for
upper foundation stage children. The photograph shows its
unusual design. The garden areas to each side of the steps
have been planted up since the photograph was taken, with the
help and financial support of the Castleford and District
Civic Trust with whom the school has a long association.
Despite its urban setting, the school has lovely grounds to
the rear which provide excellent outdoor facilities for
playtimes, P.E. and sport, science and the wider curriculum. |
The school is staffed by
the headteacher, five fulltime teachers and two nursery nurses. A
part-time teaching assistant is attached to each class and each
afternoon nursery session. There are two office staff, four
lunchtime supervisors, three kitchen staff and the
caretaker/premises manager, supported by one cleaner. Our caretaker
was awarded ‘Caretaker of the Year’ for 2004/05. Three staff care
for the children in our successful Wrap Around provision, from 11.30
to 3.15 each day. We offer a range of popular and fully subscribed
after school clubs throughout the year. All the staff work together
to ensure the happiness and well-being of our children.
The school has recently
achieved the Basic Skills Quality Mark 2, Healthy Schools 2 and our
second Active Schools Award.
Parents
are involved in school in many ways. They join reading mornings,
help with homework and talk to staff. They support events and fund
raising. They attend meetings and courses at school. Several parents
support classes as voluntary helpers. A small group of committed
parents run a fund raising group 'The Friends of Wheldon'. This
group have recently raised money for a sun shelter in the
playground.
